I'd read somewhere that hitting the enter key a few times may be necessary.
#BAYSTACK 5520 SERIAL PORT SETTINGS MANUALS#
The manuals are very vague and I'm hoping someone with experience with nortel will find this. The switch has options to disable the console port and I wouldn't be shocked if it was possible to disable the UI button or change its function. There's a button inside (when you remove the case) and I really want to press it because I question if the settings were really reset to factory default when I held the UI button like the manuals say to do. and communicates via "DB9" 9600 Baud, 8N1, VT100 emulation. I know all the defaults like IP: 0.0.0.0, username: RW, etc. It has a lot of ethernet ports, a console port, and no other ports/interfaces of use to me. Putty is up-to-date, so is minicom.Īll I can say of the switch is that it's a Nortel Baystack 5510-48T. I'm using the most recent, stable version of F23 with KDE Plasma. In putty, a terminal-like window opens with nothing but the same solid cursor box. etc., and then a solid cursor box sits there and nothing happens. However, when I connect everything up and run minicom or open the connection in Putty, all I get is nothing.

From some reading online I discovered I don't need any additional drivers for the usb device and both minicom and putty seem to communicate with it at /dev/ttyUSB0 and a 9600 8N1 connection as my settings.

Even if I scan for something active within IP ranges (can't scan ALL possible IPs) I find nothing.įiguring the ultimate solution was via the console port, I bought a usb-serial converter and a serial cable. I multiple physical connections (switch directly to computer, switch to router) with various software environments (bootp server on computer, assigning a static IP to the switch's MAC with the router) and tried accessing the default IP of 0.0.0.0 from a web browser and using telnet in konsole and got no connection. pdfs) I can access a web interface, use telnet, or come hell and high water: the DB9 (RS-232) console port to set up the switch. According to the manuals (there's about 1,200 pages over four. Unfortunately, I can't seem to access this thing no matter what I try to do.

I tried connecting it to my modem and computer (like I can with the really simple switch that I use to feed my bluray and xbox) and no interwebs happened. I even reset it to factory defaults using the UI button on the front. It's a Nortel Baystack 5510-48T and does indeed power on! On top of that, from what the manual says, the lights on the front indicate that it's operating normally. All the seller could say of its functionality was it powers on.

So I bought an decent switch on ebay a while ago as a sort of gamble.
